BIOS Boots to UEFI Shell Instead of Windows
So, I finally figured out what was keeping Js MSI laptop from booting Windows 11 and getting stuck in the UEFI Shell every time she tried to start the thing. I finally decided it was time to rewrite the EFI partition but it turns out I really didn't need to. Poking around inside of the Windows Recovery Thingamabob got me on the right track, though:
There was a second freaking EFI partition that windows had supposedly created during one of its many, many (many) update sessions. Since Windows is not only incredibly slow, it is also incredibly stupid, so it did so by moving all other partitions to the back! So this one was the first on the disk! With nothing to boot on it! Because, I seem to remember, it decided to crash spectacularly during one of said updates! Which resulted in it leaving behind an empty, very superfluous partition, so BIOS got confused, and booted UEFI shell as a fall back. After following some random YouTube dude's video half way through I discovered what had happened and just deleted the first (newly created) partition. Now there are like 350 MB of unallocated space on the SSD but Windows boots again without having to enter "exit" at every startup.
What the f*cking hell?! And, why does Windows 11 insist on using f*cking BitLocker by default? I hate that thing! If there is one rule in the universe, it is: Windows always f*cks up! So please, until you figure your sh*t out, Microsoft, please don't encrypt my hard drive, I need to have access to it from the recovery console without having to enter the f*cking key every f*cking time!
In other news, I finally managed to give two of the many Windows 10 machines that will be obsolete this month a new lease on life by enrolling them in Microsoft's ESU (Extended Security Updates) programme. I hope that as many people as possible will use this to extend their hardware's productive phase. I find it most disturbing that I'm supposed to throw away perfectly good PCs just because M$ thinks we all need some stupid TPM on our motherboards or inside the CPU. (Then again, they are locking down the possibility to install Win 11 with only local accounts, so their scheme to close down their ecosystem even more is progressing as planned. Sorry, Linux user here, all this should be illegal, in my opinion! Instead they are discussing whether a Schnitzel is still a Schnitzel when it is made from soybeans.) Anyways, the more people refuse to "upgrade" to 11 the sooner M$ might reconsider their policies. One can hope!
That's it. I'll return to the scheduled programming now. I'm gettin' too old for this shit!
